Progressive Slot Machines

In a normal slot machine, you put in your quarter or dollar or what have you, set the machine spinning and wait to see what happens. There are set winning outcomes programmed into the slot machine, and each slot machine has its own various payouts depending on the various winning combinations, usually done as a percentage of each individual bet (for example, 200% of the individual bet, 500% of the individual bet, etc.). It makes no difference what you bet on the last round, or the round before: each spin of the slots only takes into account that single individual bet.

Progressive slots work differently. Each winning combination on the machine has its own allotted minimum jackpot, but added to this is a percentage of the number of coins currently in the machine at the time of winning. For example, if there were $500 worth of coins in the machine and you hit a jackpot that gives you, say, 10% of what is currently in the machine, you will get $50 on top of the normal jackpot that the machine offers.

Within the world of progressive slot machines there are also differing types. The type described above is an individual progressive machine: the means that the jackpot is taken only from the winnings of that individual machine. The next type are the group progressives: these are a number of machines that are linked together, generally three or four or five machines at a time, sometimes more. Here the progressive jackpots are taken from all of the machines in total. This provides for potentially much higher payouts, but it also lowers your individual chance of winning.

Lastly there are the wide area progressives. The individual and group progressive machines are both systems that are completely owned and operated by an individual casino. Wide area progressives, however, are machines that are linked between a number of different casinos where the machines are all owned by a single third party operator (each casino keeps a percentage of the earnings from the machines in their casino). These offer the largest jackpots, oftentimes getting into the millions and even the multi-millions. They are also of course the ones offering the least chance of winning.

Of all slot machines, the progressives are the machines that boast the largest payouts. However you have a much slimmer chance of winning those massive payouts. While they can be fun to play, you are more likely to lose more of your betting allowance much more quickly playing these games than playing other slots that are to be had.
